Alright, so I can't believe this hasn't been discussed here yet, but what are some of your opinions regarding our upcoming next generation consoles: the Microsoft Xbox Series X and Sony PlayStation 5?

Xbox Series X

PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 DualSense controller

Obviously we haven't seen too much in the looks department yet regarding the PS5, but we have seen the dev kits out in the wild and the new controller. As always, an iteration on the previous gen of DualShock controllers, but definitely a bigger *looking* leap this time around.

I just built a PC and my Xbox One is still solid so I am somewhat in a position to just sit back and watch the next-gen unfold, but at the same time I have purposely not upgraded to an Xbox One X (to get the native 4k rendering capability and finally take advantage of the beautiful 4k tv) in anticipation of whatever was going to come next.

Xbox Series X Specs
CPU
8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.8GHz (3.6GHz with SMT) 7nm

GPU
12 TFLOPs, 52 CUs at 1.825GHz, Custom RDNA 2

Storage
1TB custom NVMe SSD

Memory
16GB GDDR6

I/O
HDMI 2.1 output, 3x USB 3.2, networking port, expanded storage slot, 4K UHD Blu-ray drive

PlayStation 5 Specs
CPU
AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)

GPU
10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)

Storage
Custom 825GB SSD

Memory
16GB GDDR6

I/O
NVMe SSD slot (expandable storage), USB HDD support (PS4 games only), 4K UHD Blu-ray drive

Any thoughts so far?

I think this will be the first time that I don't jump and get the new Xbox on release day. I am going to hold tight with my Xbox One X and my PC and see what happens. I am already 100% positive that I will not be buying a PS5, I have zero interest in Playstation now that The Show will be on Xbox starting next year.

The reason I am sitting back on the Xbox is because I believe that most of the games I will be able to play on my PC, which if that is the case I won't really need the new Xbox. I guess I will just see how things unfold and this might be the generation that I switch over to a total PC gamer.

I'm kind of in the same boat, I just built a nice PC so if it's too similar to a PC I will just stick with my shiny new rig. I do however need 4k abilities for my TV so perhaps I will just snag the Xbox One X if the price drops a bit more when the Series X comes out.

So the prices came out a few days ago for the upcoming Xbox. I am still not buying any consoles upon release, but these prices are more or less what I expected.

Xbox Series S - $ 299

Xbox Series X - $ 499

I'm anxious to see if any good deals run on an Xbox One X. If not, I'll probably snag the Series X sometime later this year to finally leverage the 4k capabilities of my TV!

I am sure there will be some great deals ESPECIALLY with the holidays approaching. I love the One X, it is a great console and the main reason I am not in a rush to upgrade to a Series X.

Hello all! Since we are dawning on the release of the Series X tomorrow and the PS5 on the 12th, did anyone here manage to snag a pre-order? If not, when do you think realistically you will acquire the next gen console? Curious on your thoughts! It's always such an awesome time when we are witnessing one of these moments! I can't wait to see what the next gen has in store (pun intended).

It's always nice to see freshly-spec'd consoles help bridge the gap between PCs and consoles. It makes some of the more impressive graphical feats available to the average person in their living room!

Sadly, I have not pre-ordered anything yet but I am ready to pull the trigger at any moment now. Just waiting for some potential Black Friday deals. If they don't happen by Cyber Monday, I'll probably just get something anyway. At that point, I just have to decide if I want to go from original Xbox One > Xbox One X, or original Xbox One > Xbox Series X.

What about you, KGfess? Are you thinking about the PS5 or Xbox, or are you still happy with your PC?

I actually didn't preorder for this console release. I got the Xbox One on release day but this generation I am going to wait. I have been playing PC mainly for the past year so I am in no rush. I will get a Series X at some point in 2021.

I'm definitely gonna grab the PS5 this generation. I am so hyped for Demon's Souls and that looks like such a promising launch title. I never played the original, but I love those games as you know lol. I also loved Spider-Man--those games are straight up fun and Miles Morales looks gorgeous in next gen. I have no idea when this will happen though...pre-orders are obsolete at this point, and if you can't snag an online order on launch day, there's pretty much no hope until they release more (as far as I know).

I actually haven't gamed on that PC in quite awhile....when I had school and stuff I adopted a laptop since I couldn't drag my desktop to campus lol. It still runs really well though--that was an awesome experience building that with you.

I could see myself getting a PS5 in 2-3 years, that's what I did with the PS4. I didn't get that until 2016. Although the only reason I bought it was for MLB, and with that coming to Xbox now I might not need to.

KGfess, that was indeed a pleasant experience building that PC! Happy to hear it's still running well for you. I'm sure it could still run most if not all of today's games, right? You ever play any FPS on there like Battlefield?

I could also see myself getting a PS5 in a couple years. As you guys know it's never been a part of my arsenal. I am definitely drooling at the thought of a Series X though finally taking advantage of our 4k TV. I'm starting to think the purchase might happen before the end of the year, but when I actually get it is another question entirely. xD Preorders have been and will continue to be sold out for the Xbox and PS5 for some time it seems.

Would be really interested in some gaming time with both of you soon!
