So, what's going on with handhelds?

Am I crazy or have the 3DS and Vita completely died off? If I had to guess, I would say it's due to the ever-rising popularity of mobile gaming. I do understand the 3DS and Vita are getting a bit old, but I can't help but feel as if there was so much wasted potential in that space.

What do you guys think? Are there some cool titles worth checking out that I've missed? I suppose I haven't taken a look at the PS Store or Nintendo Store for 3DS recently...

I love me a good handheld system! I still own pretty much every style of Game boy, a Sega Game Gear, PSP, and 3DS. But the game changer for me was buying a Nintendo Switch. I have so much in the palm of my hands now! It's simple and sleek, but still very versatile. I can play a quick fun round of Mario Kart, or Smash or spend hours getting lost in the world of Zelda. I know these previous systems had the same or similar games, but the Switch is a game changer. I can play on my TV and if my wife wants to watch something i can just remove it from the dock and play on the go. It's great for multiplayer too. Usually my wife gets bugged if i play my 3DS too much when we travel haha well now i can split the joy cons up and she can join me on most games! now I can kick her butt in Mario Kart at home and on Vacation. Either way i will still continue to play my 3DS, but i think the Swicth has set a new tone for handhelds and how they'll be portrayed in the future
There's nothing to see here, And that nothing looks back at us.

Don't get me started on handhelds. I have owned 2 (PSP and Vita) and they both let me down. I had such high hopes for the Vita, especially after the Uncharted game they released. I am not sure why it just dropped off the face of the Earth, I can only assume it is due to what you said, mobile phones/tablets. Oh well, I still have my Vita with all of the classic Final Fantasy's and stuff. I heard the Switch is legit but I am not wasting money on it.

Yeah all the classic handhelds are still great! I guess they were all just building up to this very moment then: mobile/tablet/Switch. This is how it has all evolved, so to speak. With that in mind I can say all of those classic handhelds more than did their part! There's still a ton of RPGs I never tried out for GBA, DS, and 3DS. Hopefully one day when byte1ife takes off I will have a bit more time to do just that!

I enjoyed the hell out of my PSP back in the day! I didn't have the biggest collection or anything, maybe five games or so. Never got to try out the Vita too much besides when Latdogg was in town, but it looked super cool at the time.

By the way, rumor has it Nintendo is working on a smaller and cheaper Switch this year. Possibly by eliminating the dock (~$90) and combining the Joycons with the screen to make one piece? Obviously reasonable to expect a smaller screen as well. I might be interested in this...it will be even more portable. My only question then will be regarding battery life. But then that just completes the cycle and we're back to the more traditional form factor again! The plot thickens...
